Same-Day CEREC Crown: Cost, Pros & Cons

One appointment. No temporary crown. No second visit. But is the convenience worth the premium?

How CEREC Works

Step 1: Dentist prepares the tooth (same as traditional crown).

Step 2: A 3D camera scans your tooth - no messy impressions.

Step 3: CAD software designs the crown on screen. Your dentist adjusts the shape in real time.

Step 4: A milling machine carves the crown from a ceramic block in 15–20 minutes.

Step 5: Crown is stained, glazed, and bonded to your tooth. Total time: 2–3 hours, one visit.

When CEREC Makes Sense

  • You hate dental visits: One and done. No second appointment, no temporary crown anxiety.
  • Time is money: Two dental appointments = two half-days off work. CEREC saves you a full appointment.
  • Back teeth: Where cosmetic perfection matters less and strength matters more. CEREC excels here.
  • Single crown: CEREC is ideal for one crown. For multiple crowns that need to match, a lab may do better.

When Traditional Is Better

  • Front teeth smile zone: A skilled lab technician hand-layering porcelain still produces the most lifelike results.
  • Multiple crowns that need to match: Lab work allows for consistent colour across 3–4+ crowns.
  • Gold or PFM crowns: CEREC only mills ceramic/zirconia blocks. If you want gold, you need a lab.
  • Budget priority: Traditional crowns can be $200–$500 cheaper since there's no CEREC equipment overhead.

The Hidden Value of Same-Day

The $200–$500 premium often pays for itself when you factor in:

  • • No second appointment (save 2–4 hours + travel)
  • • No temporary crown (which can fall off, causing pain and emergency visits)
  • • No impression material (digital scan is more comfortable and accurate)
  • • Less time off work ($200–$500 of lost income for many people)

Verdict: CEREC is worth the premium for back teeth and anyone who values convenience. For visible front teeth where cosmetic perfection matters, a skilled lab still has the edge. Ask your dentist: “Do you have CEREC, and would you recommend it for this tooth?”
