You Need a Crown If...

  • The tooth has a large filling (more than 50% of the tooth)
  • The tooth is cracked or fractured
  • You've had a root canal (the tooth is weakened)
  • Significant decay has been removed
  • The tooth is a molar or premolar (bite force)
  • You need structural reinforcement, not just cosmetic improvement

You Need a Veneer If...

  • The tooth is healthy but discoloured, chipped, or slightly misaligned
  • You want to close small gaps between front teeth
  • You want a cosmetic “Hollywood smile” makeover
  • The tooth structure is mostly intact (75%+ remaining)
  • It's a front tooth where aesthetics are the priority

The Cost of Getting It Wrong

Veneer when you needed a crown: The veneer will fail within 1–3 years because it can't support a weakened tooth. You'll pay for the veneer AND then a crown. Total: $1,600–$5,500.

Crown when you could have had a veneer: You lose more healthy tooth structure than necessary (1.5mm vs 0.5mm). Not a disaster, but irreversible. The crown will work fine - you just didn't need one.

Rule of thumb: If your dentist says you need a crown, you almost certainly do - veneers can't fix structural damage. If they suggest a veneer, ask: “Is there enough tooth structure for this to last 10+ years?” A good dentist will be honest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a crown or veneer cheaper?

Veneers are slightly cheaper ($800–$2,500 vs $800–$3,000). But crowns are more often covered by insurance, so your out-of-pocket cost may be lower with a crown.

Can I get a veneer instead of a crown?

Only if 75%+ of your natural tooth is intact and healthy. If there's significant decay, a large filling, or a root canal, a veneer won't hold up.

Do veneers last as long as crowns?

Similar: porcelain veneers last 10–20 years, crowns 10–25 years. But veneers chip more easily since they only cover one surface.
